Greater Sacramento's 55+ communities sit inside four regional healthcare hubs: South Placer around Roseville, the Folsom and El Dorado foothills, Elk Grove and South County, and Sacramento Metro. Each hub has its own combination of hospitals, urgent care, and specialist networks, and the drive times from a community to its hub run roughly 10 to 20 minutes in most cases. Before you commit to a community, map your doctors and your insurance network against the hub that serves it, because proximity to care is one of the quietest, most important factors in a 55+ move.
This guide is a general orientation to the regional hubs, not medical advice and not a network directory. For a deeper corridor-by-corridor analysis, our hospital and healthcare access guide includes the full comparison and the NorCal55Plus Medical Map Test.
The Four Regional Hubs
Think of healthcare access in Greater Sacramento as four hubs, each anchored by a hospital or medical campus and each serving a specific cluster of 55+ communities. Your insurance plan decides which hub works for you; the geography decides how close you are to it.
South Placer / Roseville Hub
The Roseville hub is anchored by the Sutter Roseville Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center, and the Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center. Together they serve Sun City Roseville, Lincoln Hills, Turkey Creek, and Whitney Oaks within an easy 10- to 20-minute drive. For buyers in South Placer, this is the strongest concentration of hospital-level care in the region, with both major systems represented on the same side of town.
Folsom / El Dorado Foothills Hub
The Folsom hub is anchored by Mercy Hospital of Folsom (Dignity Health) and the major Kaiser Permanente Folsom Ambulatory Care Center, serving Regency at Folsom Ranch and Heritage El Dorado Hills. The ambulatory care center handles a wide range of outpatient and specialty services close to home, while Mercy Hospital of Folsom provides hospital-level care in the corridor.
Elk Grove / South County
South County is served by the Kaiser Permanente Promenade Medical Offices and the Dignity Health Methodist Hospital corridors, covering Madeira Ranch and Glenbrooke. The Promenade medical offices bring Kaiser outpatient and specialty care close to the Elk Grove communities, and Methodist Hospital anchors hospital care for the southern part of the region.
Sacramento Metro
At the center of the region, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento is the regional powerhouse for comprehensive academic and specialist care. For complex conditions, clinical trials, and the deepest bench of specialists, UC Davis is the destination the other hubs refer into. Living in the metro area puts the full academic medical center within reach, and even communities in the outer hubs are a manageable drive for scheduled specialist visits.
Proximity by Area: Drive Times Before You Commit
The brochure distance and the real drive are rarely the same thing. Before you commit to a community, drive the actual routes at the actual times you would travel:
- Your primary-care doctor. Will you keep them, or start fresh in the new area? If you keep them, the drive from the new home matters. If you start fresh, check whether they are accepting new patients before you move, because waitlists are real.
- The nearest hospital. From each community on your shortlist, time the drive to the hospital you would actually go to in an emergency, and to the urgent care you would use on a normal weekday. Urgent care matters more than most buyers expect, because it is where you will actually go for a bad cold or a weekend injury.
- Your specialists. If you see a cardiologist, an oncologist, an orthopedist, or any specialist regularly, map that drive too. A 15-minute drive for a monthly visit is nothing; a 45-minute drive for a weekly treatment is a lifestyle.
- Test the route at rush hour. The 9 a.m. Sunday drive is not the 8 a.m. Tuesday drive. Highway 80 and Highway 50 corridors move differently at commute times, and a 15-minute brochure drive can become 30 minutes on a school morning.
The 10- to 20-minute figure that describes most community-to-hub drives is a planning estimate, not a guarantee. Your own route, your own network, and your own schedule are the numbers that matter.
55+ Community Health Amenities: Prevention, Not Care
The health story of a 55+ community is mostly about prevention. Nearly all master-planned active-adult communities include on-site fitness centers with strength and cardio equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, and miles of walking and biking trails, and most run wellness programming like fitness classes, health education, and walking clubs. These amenities support the daily activity that keeps you out of the doctor's office, which is a real and underrated part of the healthcare picture.
What a community does not provide is medical care. There are no doctors' offices or clinics inside the gates, and the fitness center is not a physical therapy department. The community supports your health; the regional hub treats your illness. Our guide to fitness after 55: pools, walking trails, and group classes covers what the amenity side actually includes and how much of it is covered by your HOA dues.
Questions to Ask Before You Move
Take these four questions to your next community tour and to your insurance plan's website:
- How strong is my network in this area? Log into your insurance portal and search for in-network primary care, urgent care, and hospitals near the community. A great hospital 10 minutes away does you no good if it is out of network.
- What is the nearest hospital and urgent care? Name them, drive them, and check their hours. Urgent care with evening and weekend hours is worth more than a slightly closer hospital.
- Are my specialists accepting new patients? If you are starting fresh with a new primary care doctor, ask directly whether they are accepting new patients in your plan. This is a phone call worth making before you fall in love with a floor plan.
- Is there senior transportation? Ask the community about its resident shuttle, and check county senior transportation services. If driving will eventually become a question, you want the answer already in place.
Healthcare is one of those factors that is invisible on a sunny tour day and decisive on a bad one. Getting it right is part of what makes a 55+ move feel secure, and it connects naturally to the other layers of the plan: our guide to aging in place with home care and community services covers the support layer, and our emergency preparedness guide covers medical alerts and evacuation planning. If you and your partner weigh healthcare differently in the decision, our guide to when one spouse wants to move and the other doesn't helps with that conversation. For the full buying path, our buyer education pillar walks through the whole process, and you can explore the communities on NorCal55Plus.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which health systems serve the Sacramento area?
Greater Sacramento is served by several major systems. In South Placer, Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center anchor the Roseville hub. In the Folsom and El Dorado foothills, Mercy Hospital of Folsom (Dignity Health) and the Kaiser Permanente Folsom Ambulatory Care Center cover the corridor. In Elk Grove and South County, the Kaiser Permanente Promenade Medical Offices and Dignity Health Methodist Hospital serve the area, and in Sacramento proper, UC Davis Medical Center provides comprehensive academic and specialist care. Your own insurance network will determine which of these hospitals and clinics are in reach for you.
Should I choose a community based on healthcare?
Healthcare should be one of the top five factors in your decision, especially if you have an ongoing condition or a doctor you want to keep. The practical test is simple: map your community shortlist against your doctors, your hospital system, and the urgent care you would actually use, then drive the routes at the times of day you would travel. A 10- to 20-minute drive to your providers is manageable for most people; a 45-minute drive to the specialist you see monthly is a different story. Your insurance network matters as much as distance, so confirm which systems are in network before you commit.
Do 55+ communities offer health amenities?
Yes, in the wellness sense, though not medical care. Nearly all master-planned 55+ communities include on-site fitness centers, indoor and outdoor pools, walking and biking trails, and wellness programming like fitness classes and health education. These amenities support prevention and daily activity, which is a real part of staying healthy. They are not a substitute for a medical home: a community does not provide doctors, nurses, or clinics, so your hospital and physician network still comes from the surrounding region.
Is there transportation to doctor appointments?
Options exist, but they vary by community and county. Some communities run resident shuttles for shopping and appointments, and both Placer and Sacramento counties support senior transportation services through their transit systems and through the Area 4 Agency on Aging, which connects seniors with local transportation resources. If driving will eventually be a question, ask the community about its shuttle schedule and check the county senior transportation options before you move, so the plan is already in place.
