Sometimes the next step is not clear yet. That does not mean we have to walk it alone.

Sometimes the hardest part of moving is not finding another house.

It is deciding whether you are ready to leave the one that has held so much of your life.

If that is where you are today, this prayer is for you.

Take a quiet moment, and read along as Rutsell prays.

A Prayer for the Journey Ahead

You can pray this slowly, out loud or in your heart, and pause wherever you need to. The words below are the same ones on the voiceover.

Heavenly Father,

I come to You today carrying a decision that may look simple to someone else, but You know how much it holds.

You know this home.

You know the years that have passed inside these walls.

You know the laughter, the tears, the meals around the table, the people who once filled these rooms, the celebrations, the difficult seasons, and the quiet moments no one else ever saw.

You know why leaving can be hard.

And You also know what lies ahead, even when I cannot picture it clearly yet.

Lord, give me wisdom.

If it is time to stay, give me peace about staying.

If it is time to move, give me peace about moving.

If the answer is not clear yet, give me patience while I wait.

Protect me from making a decision simply because I am afraid.

Protect me from staying only because change feels uncomfortable.

Help me tell the difference between fear and wisdom.

Help me know when I am holding on because something is still right for me and when I am holding on simply because it is familiar.

Father, if I am considering downsizing, help me remember that a smaller home does not mean a smaller life.

If I am moving closer to my children or grandchildren, let me receive that new closeness as a gift.

If I am considering a 55+ community, help me look beyond the clubhouse, the pool, and the floor plans and ask whether this is a place where I can truly feel at home.

If I am leaving a house where I spent decades of my life, remind me that the memories are not trapped inside the walls.

I carry them with me.

The birthdays come with me.

The photographs come with me.

The lessons come with me.

The love comes with me.

And the people I miss are not forgotten simply because my address changes.

Lord, help me with the practical things too.

The boxes.

The paperwork.

The repairs.

The things I have kept for far too many years because I could never decide what to do with them.

Give me the strength to let go of what I no longer need without feeling as though I am letting go of the life attached to it.

Help me know what to keep.

Help me know what to give away.

Help me know what can finally be released.

And when the process feels overwhelming, remind me that I do not have to finish everything in one day.

Give me trustworthy people to walk beside me.

People who will listen before they advise.

People who will tell me the truth.

People who will not pressure me.

People who will respect the fact that this is not merely a transaction.

It is my life.

Father, if there is another home ahead for me, guide me toward the place that fits the life I am meant to live now.

Not the life I lived twenty years ago.

Not the life someone else thinks I should live.

The life You have given me today.

Help me recognize what really matters.

Safety.

Peace.

Family.

Friendship.

Health.

Community.

Purpose.

A place where I can wake up and feel grateful to be there.

If the right door opens, give me courage to walk through it.

If the wrong door closes, keep me from forcing it back open.

When something does not work out the way I hoped, help me trust that disappointment is not always the end of the story.

Sometimes a closed door may be protection.

Sometimes waiting may be preparation.

Sometimes the answer may be different from the one I expected.

Give me faith for that too.

Lord, I also pray for my family.

Change can be difficult for them as well.

A child may not understand why I want to move.

A spouse may not feel ready when I do.

A grandchild may be sad that Grandma or Grandpa is leaving the old house.

Help us talk with kindness.

Help us listen to one another.

Help us remember that love matters more than an address.

And if this move brings us closer together, let us never take that blessing for granted.

Father, give me courage for the first night in a new place.

When the boxes are still stacked against the wall.

When the rooms sound different.

When I reach for a light switch that is not where I expect it to be.

When I miss the familiar sounds of the old house.

Be with me then.

Remind me that unfamiliar does not mean wrong.

New does not mean empty.

And beginning again does not mean starting from nothing.

I bring a lifetime with me.

I bring experience.

I bring memories.

I bring the people I love.

I bring the lessons You have taught me.

And I bring faith.

Lord, help me believe that there can still be new friendships ahead.

New mornings.

New traditions.

New places to serve.

New laughter.

New memories.

New reasons to be grateful.

Help me not to live only looking backward.

Let me honor the past without being afraid of the future.

Give me the wisdom to know when it is time.

Give me the courage to act when the time comes.

Give me patience when it does not.

And through every part of this journey, remind me that I am not walking it alone.

You have been with me in every chapter that came before this one.

Be with me in the chapter ahead.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

A Thought to Carry With You Today

You may not need to decide today whether you are going to move.

Maybe today's step is smaller.

Maybe it is opening a closet and deciding what you no longer need.

Maybe it is driving through a community you have been curious about.

Maybe it is asking your children what they think.

Maybe it is sitting with your spouse and having the conversation you have both been avoiding.

Or maybe today's step is simply admitting that you have been thinking about a change.

That is enough.

Major decisions do not always begin with a FOR SALE sign.

Sometimes they begin with a prayer.

Give yourself permission to move slowly enough to make a wise decision.

And when the time comes, make the decision based on the life you want to live next, not simply on the fear of leaving the life you already know.

Moving does not mean leaving your life behind. The memories and love come with you.

One Small Step for Today

If I did not have to decide anything today, what is one thing I would want to learn about my next chapter?

  • What would my current home sell for?
  • What would it cost to live in a 55+ community?
  • Would I be happier closer to my children?
  • Could I maintain a smaller home more easily?
  • What communities would actually fit my lifestyle?
  • What would I keep if I downsized?
  • What am I most afraid of losing?

You do not have to answer all of these, or any of them. They are only questions to sit with. The point is reflection, not a to-do list.

Sometimes clarity begins with a quiet morning and the willingness to ask for guidance.

Two verses to hold close

Before the prayer, a few words to quiet the heart. Both verses are from the New International Version (NIV).

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV

We do not have to understand the entire road before taking the next faithful step.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
Isaiah 43:19, NIV

A new chapter does not erase the old one. It simply means the story is still being written.
