Every now and then, the right kind of getaway is a simple one: a group of friends, a change of scenery, and a few unhurried days together. That is exactly what about twenty seniors from Ignite Community Church in Sacramento did when they traded the everyday routine for a couple of days in Angels Camp, the historic gold country town in Calaveras County.
You could spot them coming. Matching yellow shirts, a full calendar of activities, and one simple Bible theme carried into everything: the promise of Isaiah 46:4, that God is the One who sustains us even to old age and gray hairs. That promise went with them everywhere, into every meal, every conversation, and every quiet moment by the water.
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you.”
Rendered here as it is commonly shared; translations differ slightly in the exact words. The promise is the same: God is the One who carries us and sustains us into every season of life.
The Group: One Church, One Unmistakable Color
The retreat was a true cross-section of the church. Ignite Community Church is a primarily Filipino congregation on Stevenson Avenue in Sacramento, with members of American and other nationalities woven in. The group reflected that mix beautifully: about fifteen women and five men made the trip.
And the matching yellow shirts did their quiet, cheerful work. What could have stayed a collection of individuals became one unmistakable group the moment everyone put them on. Seated together, walking together, gathered in a circle together, they looked like what they were: a family on an outing.
The Activities: Full Days, in the Best Way
The days were full in the best way. The seniors made plenty of use of the retreat's spa and pool, easing into the slower pace and letting the water do what water does: loosen the shoulders, slow the clock, and make room for conversation.
Around that, the schedule was packed with activities designed for fellowship, laughter, and rest. There was always something to do together, and always room to do nothing together. By the end of each day, everyone was tired in the happy way that comes from being with people who know you.
The Journey: What Made It Special
It would be easy to say the retreat was about the activities, and there were plenty of those. But ask anyone who went, and the answer goes deeper. The friendships. The faith. The verse that held it all together, the reminder that God sustains us even to old age and gray hairs. And the quiet truth underneath: this season of life is worth celebrating, and it is even better when it is celebrated with people who love you.
For a few days in Angels Camp, the everyday routine could wait. What mattered was right there in the room: yellow shirts, open hearts, and the promise that none of us are carried alone.
Come and Visit
On behalf of Ignite Community Church, consider this your invitation. If you have been looking for a place to belong, the church in Sacramento is a welcoming, multigenerational community of people who love God and one another. Whether you arrive alone or with a group like this one, the welcome is real.
The yellow shirts proved it in Angels Camp: God sustains us, and He often does it through the people He gives us to share the journey with.
